Developed in the 1940s by M.C. Byles of West Virginia. After 6 years of saving his best and biggest cross-pollination results, Byles sold plants of this variety for $1 each and paid off his $6,000 mortgage. Thus, he named the variety Mortgage Lifter. Large, up to one pound, fruits have a delicious, rich, and sweet flavor. A very popular variety for good reason! Plant has an indeterminate growth habit (needs a tall tomato cage). Also available in a grafted version. A good sub, if sold out, is Mortgage Lifter Grafted, Brandywine Sudduth's Grafted, Ramapo or Momotaro.
