We grow Black Bear every year due to its excellent flavor. If you're a fan of Cherokee Purple, this is another excellent purple-black to try. This tomato made its way into the US via Neil Lockhart (SSE IL LO N), who obtained his heirloom seed through European seed savers from Germany and Belarus. Black Bear is descended from a tomato of Russian origin named Negrityonok, although Black Bear is larger at 8-16oz. We love dark tomatoes like this one for their excellent, smokey-sweet flavor and gorgeous color. Plant has an indeterminate growth habit (needs a tall tomato cage). A good sub for Black Bear, if sold out, is Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, or Indira Gandhi.
